Manufacturer

Internal CSS decryption and perfect image quality. It can copy the whole DVD movie including menus, subtitles and bonus material, but requires two discs to back up most movies because the software does not have any video compression capability.

Features:

Clone DVD's features include the ability to copy a movie 1:1. It cannot compress video, so in most cases two discs will be required to make a backup. You can however save everything on the original disc in the exact same quality as the original. With its built-in CSS decryptor, there's no need to install any additional software.

Ease of use:

Clone DVD is easy to use.   Its interface is simple, clean and user-friendly.  However, you will need to confirm the beginning of the burning process once the software has finished reading and decrypting the movie.  We noticed the chapter selection and menus pointed to the wrong location during one of our tests.

Setup:

The setup and installation is simple and with the built-in CSS decryption, the installation process is simplified.

Video quality:

The video quality is the same as the original. Due to the lack of video compression capability, most movies will need to be split onto two discs.

Supported operating systems:

Windows XP, 2000, ME and 98.

Customer support:

Customer support appears to be poor.  We sent three emails over several days and we did not get a reply.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Interface easily understandable
  • Built-in CSS decryption
  • Easy to install
  • No compression available.  Most movies will be on two discs.
  • Can't try the software before you buy.
  • Can't omit bonus material.
  • Need double the space on hard drive.
  • Need to manually start the burning process.
  • Poor customer service
  • Expensive

Summary

Overall, Clone DVD is an acceptable solution if you don't mind copying most movies on two discs and paying a higher than average price for limited functionality.
